WhatsApp API Display Name
Your WhatsApp Display Name is the business name your customers see on your WhatsApp profile — in chat windows, contact lists, and group conversations. It is also the name used to generate the certificate required to register and activate your WhatsApp Business Platform account.
WhatsApp API Display Name Guidelines
Getting your Display Name right from the start avoids delays in account setup. Meta reviews every Display Name before it becomes active, and names that don't meet the guidelines will be rejected.

Display Name: The Golden Rule
Your Display Name must clearly and accurately represent your business. It should match how your brand appears on your official website and external marketing materials — same wording, same capitalisation, same spacing.
Do's and Don'ts
✔ Do | ✘ Don't |
|---|---|
✔ Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your website. | ✘ Use a generic or vague term (e.g. Fashion, Shop, Service). |
✔ Match capitalisation to your external branding (e.g. TechNova not Technova). | ✘ Change capitalisation or spacing to something different from your website. |
✔ Add a geographic or product qualifier if needed (e.g. "Sunrise Bakery Mumbai"). | ✘ Use a full personal name (e.g. "John Smith") as the Display Name. |
✔ Include a department or division indicator (e.g. "Acme Corp – Support"). | ✘ Use slogans, taglines, or descriptions (e.g. "Best Pizza in Town"). |
✔ Make the parent/child relationship clear if representing a subsidiary (e.g. "FlightEase by Global Voyager"). | ✘ Use emojis, special characters, punctuation, or symbols in the name. |
✔ Use the format "[Product/Service] by [Business Name]" for product lines. | ✘ Format the name as a URL or email address. |
✔ Use at least 3 characters in your Display Name. | ✘ Reference Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook, or any other Meta product name. |
✔ Ensure your business has a working, publicly accessible website. | ✘ Use a generic geographic location alone (e.g. "Mumbai", "Lagos"). |
✔ Get WhatsApp team approval if your business has a government affiliation. | ✘ Infringe trademarks or use names belonging to other businesses. |
✔ For test/demo accounts, keep the business association clear (e.g. "Acme Corp Test"). | ✘ Use a standalone product category without a business name (e.g. "Cold Pressed Juices"). |
Display Name: Formatting Rules
Beyond the content of your name, WhatsApp also enforces strict formatting rules:
- Minimum 3 characters long.
- Must use grammatically correct capitalisation that matches your external branding.
- No extra punctuation, emojis, or character symbols unless they are genuinely part of your registered brand.
- No extra spaces, hyphens, or separators added beyond your standard brand name.
- Cannot be formatted as a website URL (e.g. www.mycompany.com) or email address.
- Cannot reference Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram.
Examples
Use the table below to understand what gets approved and what gets rejected — and why.
Scenario | ✔ Accepted | ✘ Rejected | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
Standard business name | ✔ Sunrise Bakery ✔ Sunrise Bakery Mumbai | ✘ Bakery ✘ Best Bakery ✘ Sunrise 🥐 Bakery | Generic terms and emojis are not allowed |
Product line with parent brand | ✔ Cold Pressed Juices by Fresh Produce ✔ Fresh Produce Cold Pressed Juices | ✘ Cold Pressed Juices ✘ FP Cold Pressed Juices ✘ Fresh Produce Juices | The parent brand must be present; abbreviations and removals break branding consistency |
Department / division | ✔ Acme Corp – Support ✔ Acme Corp Customer Care | ✘ Support ✘ Customer Care ✘ Acme Help | Standalone department names have no business relationship context |
Subsidiary or partner brand | ✔ FlightEase by Global Voyager ✔ Commercial Air by Global Voyager | ✘ Commercial Air ✘ FlightEase | The relationship to the verified parent business must be explicitly stated |
Personal name as business | ✔ Dr. Patel Dental Clinic ✔ Patel & Associates Law | ✘ Priya Patel ✘ John Smith | A full personal name alone is not a business identity |
Test / demo account | ✔ Acme Corp Test ✔ Fresh Produce Demo | ✘ Test ✘ Demo Account ✘ Bot | Test accounts must maintain a clear link to the parent business |
Capitalisation & spacing | ✔ TechNova ✔ techNova (if that's the brand) | ✘ Technova ✘ Tech Nova ✘ TECHNOVA | Must match exactly how the brand appears on the official website |
Government-affiliated org | ✔ City of Mumbai Water Board (with WhatsApp approval) | ✘ Mumbai Water Board (without approval) | Any government affiliation requires explicit WhatsApp team sign-off |
Common Reasons for Rejection
If your Display Name is rejected, it is usually due to one of the following:
- The name is too generic (e.g. a single common noun like "Fashion" or "Tech").
- The name is a person's full name with no business context.
- The name contains emojis, symbols, or special characters.
- The name doesn't match what appears on your business website.
- The name references WhatsApp, Meta, Facebook, or Instagram.
- The name is a slogan, tagline, or marketing description.
- The name is formatted as a URL or email address.
- Your business website is not publicly accessible or doesn't feature the name.
- A subsidiary name is used without clarifying the parent company relationship.
How to Change Your Display Name
If your Display Name is rejected or you need to update it, follow these steps:
- Log in to Meta Business Manager.
- Navigate to WhatsApp Manager > Account Tools > Phone Numbers.
- Click the edit button next to your current Display Name.
- Enter your new Display Name and submit for review.
- Await Meta's review — this typically takes 1 to 3 business days.
